Adverbial Clause adalah subordinate clause (anak kalimat) yang difungsikan sebagai adverb (suatu keterangan dalam sebuah kalimat). Umumnya adverbial clause dibentuk oleh ‘Conjunction’ (kata penghubung).

Berikut ini adalah jenis-jenis Conjunction dalam Adverbial Clause:

ADVERBIAL CLAUSE OF CONTRAST

Yaitu anak kalimat (clause) yang difungsikan sebagai keterangan (adverb) yang bermakna ‘pertentangan’ (walaupun/meskipun).

  • Conjunction                 : although, even though, even if, etc.
  • Conjunctive Adverb   : however, nevertheless, nonetheless
  • Preposition                   : despite, in spite of, regardless of

e.g.

  • I won’t give up on us even if the skies get rough.
  • You’ll be in my life even though I’m not in your life.
  • Although it was raining cats and dogs, I kept coming to class.
  • Despite I came late, I was allowed to come into class.*

→ Despite coming late/being late, I was allowed to come into class.

Despite the fact that I came late, I was allowed to come into class.

* NOTE :   Setelah preposition (despite/in spite of) tidak boleh berupa rangkaian ‘S + V’, melainkan harus berupa ‘noun/gerung (Ving)’. Akan tetapi dalam ketentuan lain, ‘depite/in spite of’ bisa diikuti dengan ‘S + V’ ketika ditambahkan “the fact that” è despite/ in spite of the fact that + S + V + (O/A).

ADVERBIAL CLAUSE OF REASON

Yaitu anak kalimat (clause) yang difungsikan sebagai keterangan (adverb) yang bermakna ‘alasan atau sebab’ (karena).

  • Conjunction                 : as, since, because, in that, etc.
  • Preposition                   : due to, owing to, because of

e.g.

  • Since you have studied so hard, you get a satisfying result.
  • I wake up late because I stay up all night.
  • Most of the American people hate Donald Trump as he spreads racial hatred.
  • Due to he was sick, Amdhany was absent in the class yesterday.

→ Due to his sickness, Amdhany was absent in the the class yesterday.

→ Due to being sick, Amdhany was absent in the class yesterday.

Due to the fact that he was sick, Amdhany was absent in the class.

ADVERBIAL CLAUSE OF PLACE

Yaitu anak kalimat yang difungsikan sebagai keterangan (adverb) yang bermakna tempat.

  • Conjunction                 : where, wherever, anywhere (that), etc.
  • Preposition                   : in, on, at, above, under, beneath, etc.

e.g.

  • Where there is a will, there is a way.
  • Maria usually stays where she and her family used to stay.
  • Maria usually stays in her family’s house.

ADVERBIAL CLAUSE OF PURPOSE

Yaitu anak kalimat yang yang difungsikan sebagai keterangan (adverb) yang bermakna ‘tujuan’.

  • Conjunction                 : so that, in order that (positive), lest, for fear that (negative)
  • Variasi ‘to Infinitive’  : (in order) to + V1 murni, so as to + V1 murni

e.g.

  • Benjamin worked hard every day so that he might earn much money.
  • I’ve come earlier in order that you can get the best seat in the cinema.
  • Jon Snow has studied English well so that he can qualify for a better job.

→ Jon Snow had studied English well (in order) to/so as to qualify for a better job.

(In order) to/so as to qualify for a better job, Jon Snow has studied English well.

ADVERBIAL CLAUSE OF RESULT

Yaitu anak kalimat yang difungsikan sebagai keterangan (adverb) untuk menyatakan hasil atau akibat dari suatu pekerjaan.

  1. Conjunction                 : So that, so… that…
  2. S + V + so + adjective/adverb + that + S + V
  3. S + V + such (a/an) noun (singular/plural/uncountable) + that + S + V
  4. S + V + so + adjective + (a/an) singular noun + that + S + V
  5. S + V + so + many/few plural noun + that + S + V
  6. S + V + so + much/little uncountable noun + that + S + V

e.g.

  • When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but we often look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one (door) which has been opened for us.
  • I work so hard every day that I get tired on the weekend and need a rest.
  • I have so few job offers that it isn’t hard to select the one.
  • Many Youtubers can earn so much money that they are getting richer and richer.
